As warmer weather approaches, British Columbians are being urged to prepare for seasonal hazards including flooding, drought, and wildfires. The latest snowpack report shows B.C. is at 79% of normal, and melting snow combined with rainfall may increase the risk of spring flooding in low-lying areas.
Drier-than-average conditions and long-term water supply issues mean drought could also be a concern this year. The Province is updating its Drought and Water Scarcity Response Plan and encouraging water conservation now to help lessen impacts later.
Wildfire risk remains elevated due to ongoing drought. The BC Wildfire Service is preparing for an active spring wildfire season and recommends homeowners follow FireSmart tips to reduce risks around their properties.
Residents are encouraged to create emergency kits with food, water, medication, and supplies, as well as a grab-and-go bag in case of evacuation. Having a household emergency plan and registering for Emergency Support Services at ESS.gov.bc.ca can also help during emergencies.
The Province has strengthened emergency response systems and increased support for evacuees, including direct deposits and accommodation funding. By being prepared, individuals and communities can better respond to whatever this season may bring.
