Today is Advance Care Planning Day in Prince Rupert, officially proclaimed by Mayor Herb Pond. The day encourages residents to think ahead about their medical care and make their wishes known in case of a health emergency.
Hospice volunteers will be available at Acropolis Manor from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and at Northern Savings Credit Union from noon to 4 p.m., to answer questions and offer planning resources.
Advance care planning involves choosing someone to speak on your behalf if you’re unable to do so, and documenting your preferences for care. Emergencies can happen without warning, and having a clear plan in place helps ease the burden on loved ones and ensures your choices are respected.
The Prince Rupert and District Hospice Society, along with local health partners like BC Ambulance through the Green Sleeves initiative, are working together to promote awareness and provide support for completing these plans.
Residents are encouraged to talk with family, friends, and healthcare providers about their wishes and to take the first steps toward documenting them today.
The city hopes this initiative will empower more people to take control of their future care before it’s too late.
