Eight community shuttle services will continue or launch across northern B.C., providing residents in rural and remote areas with reliable, safe, and affordable regional transportation. Over $1.3 million in funding has been allocated through the Northern Community Shuttle Program for a two-year period, supporting access to services and reducing isolation in smaller communities.
The program, administered by the Northern Development Initiative Trust, helps First Nations, municipalities, and non-profits develop local transportation solutions. These shuttles connect people to healthcare, education, social services, and long-haul options like BC Bus North.
The latest announcement sees the continuation of seven shuttle services and the addition of a new one operated by the Yekooche First Nation, which will connect Yekooche, Fort St. James, Vanderhoof, and Prince George. Other routes link communities such as Smithers, Fraser Lake, Houston, Fort Nelson, and Mackenzie.
Officials say the program strengthens the region’s social fabric by supporting mobility for work, appointments, and staying in touch with loved ones. With long distances and limited transit options in northern B.C., the community shuttles are considered a vital service for residents’ well-being and connection.
