Liberal leader Mark Carney is pledging to defend British Columbia and all of Canada from U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed protectionism, promising strong economic leadership in the face of rising international tensions.
Speaking Wednesday, Carney accused Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre of lacking a plan to counter Trump’s aggressive trade tactics. Carney said a Liberal government would protect Canadian jobs, cut taxes for the middle class, and spark growth with a comprehensive economic agenda.
Carney’s platform includes a major homebuilding push, aiming for 500,000 new units annually, tax breaks on homes under $1.5 million, and support for B.C.’s mass timber industry. He also pledged to invest over $25 billion in prefabricated housing technologies and to cover up to $8,000 in apprenticeship training costs to grow the skilled trades workforce.
Additional commitments include funding trade infrastructure to reduce dependence on the U.S., creating Canadian standards for federal infrastructure using local materials, and advancing reconciliation by working closely with Indigenous communities.
Framing the election as a turning point, Carney said his party offers the plan and leadership needed to stand firm against Trump’s tariffs and build the fastest-growing economy in the G7.
