A 40-year-old man is in police custody following a series of arson and shooting incidents in Fort Nelson. The man, known to police, was asked to leave a community meeting at the Fort Nelson First Nations Reserve on April 23 after becoming disruptive and appearing intoxicated. Shortly after, he allegedly set fire to two vehicles in the community hall parking lot, one of which was owned by the First Nation.
At around 7:45 p.m., police received reports of shots fired at the man’s residence on the Reserve. A woman later reported seeing the man pursue her on an ATV while firing a rifle in her direction. The man was found with a gunshot wound at the local hospital shortly after, prompting a temporary lockdown.
Officers later found a firearm at the man’s residence but no evidence of a shooting there. The man’s injuries are not life-threatening, and he remains in custody. The Northern Rockies RCMP have increased their presence in the area as they continue their investigation, urging the public to share any information directly with authorities to avoid spreading misinformation on social media.
The investigation is ongoing.
