The transportation ministry says Highway 16 is shut down about 8 km east of Smithers.
There is a vehicle incident in the area and hydro lines are down. Traffic is blocked in both directions.
Officials say BC Hydro crews are on scene.
Local light traffic should use the Telkwa High Road/Babine Road until clear.
BC Hydro says over 1200 of its customers in the Telkwa area were without power.
Most customers had the lights come back on around 10:30 pm.
