The federal government has announced nearly $5.7 million for Indigenous Guardian programs, including nine projects in B.C.
The Indigenous Guardians Pilot Program is geared support First Nation, Métis, and, Inuit communities as they work to protect sensitive areas and species, monitor ecological health, and maintain cultural sites.
The Tahltan Community-Based Climate Change monitoring program based in Dease Lake will addresses climate change concerns using woodland caribou seasonal movements, climate data, and traditional knowledge.
The Tsilhqot’in National Government also received funding to expand its Guardians program into Dasiqox Tribal Park to integrate the initiatives of the TNG and communities.
The federal government committed $25 million for the Indigenous Guardians Pilot in the 2017 budget and has received over 60 applications for consideration.
