New Indigenous education courses are among a slew of new changes being made to BC’s K-12 curriculum for 2019.
Beginning in September of next year, several new Indigenous-focused courses will be added to the curriculum in an effort to help students see the world from a variety of perspectives.
Along with the new Indigenous courses, a range of new course options are being added to help support the careers of tomorrow.
Some of these new course areas include: environmental science, web development, digital media, engineering, and robotics.
On top of course changes, the new curriculum will also alter the way students from grades 10 to 12 are tested.
Three new mandatory graduation assessments are being added: a numeracy test in Grade 10, and literacy tests in grades 10 and 12.
Each of the new tests will be recorded as stand-alone sections on the student’s transcript.
The new tests will replace course-based provincial exams, in an effort to evaluate a student’s essential learning abilities rather than course-specific knowledge.
