A developmental moratorium has been placed on the marine are adjacent to Lelu Island by the Prince Rupert Port Authority.
This moratorium will prohibit any industrial development on the Flora, Agnew, and Horsey Banks in an effort to protect salmon populations.
Though reviews had previously determined that development could take place in the area with little environmental impact, the Port is recognizing the risk it would pose to the ecology of the Skeena River estuary.
This decision was made after extensive discussions with both elected and hereditary chiefs from the Metlakatla and Lax Kw’alaams First Nations.
