One community organization is looking to bring a major basketball tournament to Terrace, with a little help from City Council.
Making use of an over-ice hardwood court purchased from Prince Rupert, the Terrace Basketball Association hopes to host the event at the Sportsplex.
But they’ll first need Council to waive a 12 thousand dollar fee.
Unfortunately, the budget which Council would normally draw funding for this type of project from only has 9 thousand remaining in the budget.
The tournament itself would feature 84 teams across multiple divisions and would run during Riverboat Days from August 5th to the 10th.
Teams from as far away as Saskatchewan have already confirmed participation in the tourney, which would fit a mold similar to the All Native Basketball Tournament.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary, that tournament is estimated to have left close to 3.5 million dollars in Prince Rupert over the week it took place.
Council agreed that the economic impacts of the tournament were too great to ignore, and put forward a motion to have administration try to find the funding elsewhere.
In addition, the Association is looking for a heated storage facility to house their hardwood in off-months.
