While BC as a whole has benefited greatly from the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program, the north appears to be lagging behind.
In 2017, the province launched the program to help former youth in care gain access to post-secondary education and training.
As of today, there are 806 former youth in care benefiting from the program, a 326 percent increase from before its inception.
But in the northern portions of the province, the numbers aren’t as glamorous.
At the University of Northern British Columbia, just 5 students are benefiting from the program.
Northern Lights College currently has 4, while Coast Mountain College has 3 such students.
For the College of New Caledonia, however, the numbers are a bit higher, with 27 students accessing the program.
