AltaGas celebrated the grand opening of its Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal in Prince Rupert Tuesday.
The first marine export facility for propane in Canada sent its first shipment of gas May 23 and expects to export about 1.2 million tonnes of propane a year to Asia.
AltaGas President and CEO Randy Crawford calls the facility a game-changer for the company as well as customers, North Coast Indigenous peoples, and surrounding communities.
In 2017, AltaGas entered a multi-year agreement with Japanese propane importer and distributor Astomos Energy Corporation , to purchase at least 50 percent of the propane shipped from the Ridley Island terminal.
The project is owned by a joint venture between AltaGas, which holds a 70 percent stake, and a Canadian subsidiary of Royal Vopak, which holds a 30 percent interest.
