According to the BC Salmon Farmers Association, upcoming technical innovations will help reduce the impacts of open-net salmon farms.
A report released by the Watershed Watch Salmon Society earlier this week found that the number of wild salmon killed on the farms in 2017 was nine times that of 2011.
But the data on those numbers is incomplete and relies on farms self-reporting incidental catches.
In response, the Salmon Farmers Association says that, while their bycatch rate is typically less than 1 percent, the increase is staggering.
Along with the DFO, the Association is working on new technologies and regulations to better protect wild salmon.
