In an effort to improve the safety of workers on fishing vessels, WorkSafeBC has amended their regulations.
Under the new regulations, all crew members on the deck of a fishing vessel will be required to wear a personal floatation device at all times.
Previously, workers were only required to wear a PFD or lifejacket when working conditions put them at an increased risk of drowning.
Between 2007 and 2018, there were 24 work-related deaths in the commercial fishing industry, 15 of those were related to drowning.
