New burning rules, intended to improve BC’s air quality, will take effect this fall.
Open burning is the largest source of fine particulate matter pollution in the province, contributing more than the transportation, wood-heating, and wood-processing industries combined.
Under the new Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation, legal burn periods will be shortened, debris will be required to be dried out, and larger setbacks will be required, among other changes.
In addition, the new rules will grant communities more flexibility to conduct controlled burns to reduce wildfire hazards.

The new regulations will take effect on September 15th, ahead of the fall burning season.
