A joint action plan between the federal and provincial governments seeks to stem the rapid decline of BC’s fish populations.
According to a release which pre-empted the plan, steelhead trout are now sitting at critically low levels in the Thompson and Chilcotin Rivers.
In order to correct this, the pair of government branches have announced a sprawling action plan to help rehab populations.
Part of that plan will see recreational fisheries closed in the two watersheds.
Furthermore, rolling closures for commercial salmon fisheries across BC will occur between September and November.
Improvements to freshwater conditions, watershed management, and habitat protection are also included in the plan.
