Slightly improving Sockeye returns to the Skeena River have prompted a limited First Nations marine fishery.
The Department of Fisheries and Ocean says the mid-point run estimate August 6 was just over 547,000 Sockeye.
The DFO says the improvements are enough to allow some limited harvest by Skeena First Nations for food, social, and ceremonial purposes
First Nations fishery staff will be monitoring and recording catch levels to maintain sustainability.
The DFO closed the recreational salmon fishery on the entire Skeena River July 27 and the First Nations food, social, and ceremonial fishery for Skeena sockeye July 29th due to conservation concerns.
