A new conservation project has been announced on the Bella Coola estuary.
The project is located on the edge of the community of Bella Coola and near other conservation lands. This was previously unprotected private property at the mouth of the Bella Coola river.
The estuary provides essential habitat for salmon, grizzly bears, migratory birds as well as other wildlife. The new Tidal Flats Conservation Area protects inter-tidal marshes, mudflats and tidal channels that provide valuable habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds and juvenile salmon. The estuary also supports a number of species as risk.
The project was made possible by funding from the Government of Canada’s Nature fund as well as financial support from the Fish and Wildlife Compensation program.
