The pandemic is taking a heavy toll on Terrace area tourism operators.
Kermodei Tourism says a survey carried out with the city and the chamber of commerce in July and August found that 30 percent of tourism businesses have reduced staffing and 60 percent have lost revenue.
Results showed that 34 per cent voluntarily closed; 20 per cent were ordered to close; 12 per cent had to reduce their operations and/or hours; and 5 per cent are still closed.
And while some businesses have benefited from local travelers and staycations, businesses like fishing lodges that depend on international travelers have been struggling.
The tourism association says one un-named lodge has lost up to $900,000, has laid off 8 staff and may take two years to recover.
The BC tourism and hospitality sector has been calling on the province for a $680 million aid package.
Kermodei Tourism Executive Director Liz Smaha estimates tourism in Terrace typically generate $50 million in spending.
