Awakening Indigenous languages…that is a common theme that’s come up a lot in my few months as host of this program, and in this episode, we’re going to meet someone who’s just been recognized by the Prime Minister for her efforts in doing just that.
Dianna Rai is working to revive the Nisga’a language, teaching at Alvin A. McKay School in Laxgalts’ap, using a relatively new method of language revitalization, which incorporates sign language, movement and pictures to appeal to all of a person’s senses.
In our interview, Dianna will talk about the success she’s seen firsthand with the “ASK ME” program, how Elders in the community are actively involved in helping teach the youngsters, and how the youth are in turn, teaching their siblings and parents.
