Our guest on this episode is here to talk to us about her home community of the Kainai Nation in Alberta, and the struggles many there are facing due to the ongoing opioid epidemic.
Over the course of 6 years, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers documented the various battles individuals from her community faced when trying to walk the road to recovery, as well as obstacles health care workers were tackling when dealing with affected patients.
The resulting documentary is called “Kímmapiiyipitssini: The Meaning of Empathy”, which explores innovative methods of harm-reduction, introduces those directly impacted by substance use from Kainai, and exposes the deadly impact removing harm-reduction facilities can have.
In our interview, Elle-Máijá tells us not only about her documentary, which is set to debut at the Hot Docs film festival starting April 29th, but also some of the ways we can come together to help those struggling from addiction.
