The City of Prince Rupert will spend almost $565,000 on residential garbage and recycling bins.
The bins will be embedded with an RFID chip that will allow city staff to track contamination and other solid waste bylaw violations, as well as return lost bins. These bins are also required for use with the city’s new waste disposal trucks, and is part of Recycle B.C.’s arrangement with the city for curbside recycling pickup.
Every household in Prince Rupert will get two bins, one for general waste and one for recyclables. The cost of the bins will be financed through the Gas Tax along with a one-time $20 per household charge. Replacement bins will cost is $41 for a general waste bin and $65 for a recycling bin.
