The District of Kitimat will not be celebrating Canada day as hard this year.
Events like the Canada Day live updates, the super soaker water fight tour with the Mayor, and the most patriotic Canada Day house decoration contest will not be hosted this year out of respect to those most affected by the discovery of unmarked graves at former residential school sites.
However, other events like the Canada Day stage shows, the Canada Day fireworks, the Canada Day balloon extravaganza show, the international food fair, kids play areas, busker stations, mechanical bull ridings, and other Canada Day concerts – which are designed to be more celebratory, could have been reinstated since they were canceled last year, but the district decided not to out of respect for all those whose lives have been taken or been forever impacted by Canada’s national tragedies.
The district stated that this is not about cancelling Canada Day but recognizing that this year’s festivities are taking place at a time when many Canadians are struggling with tragedy and trauma that is part of our nation’s story.
