Two English place names on the Sunshine Coast are officially reverting to the original Indigenous names given to them by the shishalh Nation.
The community of Wilson Creek just south of Sechelt will resume using the name ts’ukw’um.
Saltery Bay, south of Powell River, has restored its name of sḵelhp.
Shishalh Nation Chief Warren Paull says recognizing the original names of the area is one aspect of revitalizing his people’s language and is a “good step on the path of reconciliation.”
