Some victims left out of previous settlements for Residential School survivors may soon see some justice.
Referred to as “Day Scholars”, some Indigenous children sent to Residential Schools were allowed to return home at night.
While they still suffered from cultural losses and abuses, they were left out of the 2006 settlement.
Now, a settlement has been made in Federal Court which will see them have a chance at some compensation.
Following a 60-day appeal period, in which the Government can challenge the ruling, victims will be able to apply for 10 thousand dollars in compensation.
The settlement covers all Day Scholars who were alive as of May 30th, 2005.
In addition, the settlement calls for a 50 million dollar Revitalization Fund to support healing and recovery.
