Members of the Heiltsuk First Nation are still attempting to recover financially from a 2016 oil spill.
In October of 2016, when the Nathan E Stewart tugboat nabbed national headlines, spilling more than 110 thousand litres of oil in to the water.
Now, the Nation says they are still unable to harvest shellfish from Gale Pass, near the Seaforth Channel where the crash took place.
According to Elected Chief Marilyn Slett, clam harvests from the Pass used to make the nation an estimated 200 thousand dollars annually.
Residents of the community have been strongly in support of a community led Environmental Impact Assessment for years.
That belief is due largely to Kirby Corporation, the boat’s parent company, refusing to conduct a proper assessment of the site.
Currently, the Nation is embroiled in a lawsuit against the company, the province, and the country.
