Yard waste collection in Terrace could be undergoing a major facelift, pending public consultation.
Currently, the City maintains four waste collection vehicles, two with automated pick-up arms, and two manual load vehicles.
In an effort to streamline and go fully automated, staff have proposed the retirement of the two manual trucks in favour of a new, third, automated vehicle.
While the switch brings a number of pros, including lower maintenance costs and less physical strain on employees, it would mean that curbside collection of compostable bags would end.
While this could end unlimited weekly yard waste collection, the age of the manual trucks will necessitate the replacement soon enough.
Staff are developing a number of alternate solutions to counter any potential service loss, including larger green bins, added yard waste bins, or additional drop-off locations.
A community survey will be developed to gather public input on possible changes to the collection plan when developed.
The 460 thousand dollar cost of the new vehicle would be covered by the Northern Capital Planning Grant funding.
