RCMP will be reviewing a pair of arrests made in Gitxsan territory last month, following a request from MLA Nathan Cullen.
Last week, Cullen sent a letter to RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki asking her to personally review the arrests.
But, in her response, Lucki only confirmed that the two Gitxsan men were arrested on the Hazelton rail tracks in accordance with a CN Rail injunction.
However, the RCMP’s North District division is taking the letter a bit more seriously.
While Cullen says the letter wasn’t an official complaint, Superintendent Warren Brown says they are taking it as one.
When a complaint is filed, the RCMP are obligated to launch an investigation through their Civilian Complaints Division.
A video of the arrests in question began circulating online earlier this month, showing four heavily armed officers arresting the two unarmed Gitxsan men.
They had been blocking off the tracks in a show of solidarity with Wet’suwet’en land defenders near the Wedzin Kwa, or Morice River.
