A proposal for feasibility study in to a new facility for a joint Haisla and Kitimat Museum received District approval last night.
Earlier in the month, the Kitimat Museum and Archives released their 2020-2030 Strategic Plan.
That plan strongly highlighted the need for a larger facility to operate all of the programs available at the museum.
In addition, the building is aging and water leaks, winter proofing, and an air handling unit replacement will see maintenance costs balloon if a new facility is not secured.
Now, the Museum and the Haisla Nation are looking in to the viability of a new, joint, museum, which would feature Haisla exhibits as well.
The District of Kitimat has voted to approve the pair’s application for Heritage BC’s 150 Time Immemorial Grant to fund a feasibility study.
However, the grant program only provides up to 40 thousand dollars for such a study, which is estimated to cost 60 thousand.
In order to help fill the gap, the District also agreed to contribute 6,700 dollars in funding.
