Travel advisories are in effect for a number of BC highways due to poor road conditions.
Officials are suggesting drivers avoid highway 37 between Terrace and Kitimat. due to snow that fell earlier along with a recent deep freeze laying down a sheet of ice as hard as concrete, which poses problems for highway crews trying to improve driving conditions.
Conventional wisdom would say that sanding could improve these conditions, but the highway maintenance people say the road surface is so hard sand or gravel just gets pushed off the road by traffic instead of embedding in the ice.
Crews also said that all they can do is wait out the deep freeze and keep a close eye on conditions.
It has also been suggested that if drivers do have drive on area highways, that they make sure they have some blankets, some food and other supplies just in case of any vehicle break downs.
