A First Nation on Vancouver Island has begun foundational work to locate unmarked graves at a former residential school site.
According to the Tseshaht First Nation, preperation is underway to begin the investigation at the former Alberni Indian Residential School.
Ground-penetrating radar will be utilized at the site once soil conditions allow.
Members of the Nation are also asking urging those who attended the school to share their knowledge and experience with investigators.
Cultural support will provided to those that wish to share their experiences.
A total of one million dollars in government funding will provided to the Nation over the next 2 years to undertake the work.
The Alberni Residential School operated just outside Port Alberni between 1900 and 1973.
Just last month, a similar investigation by the Williams Lake First Nation at the St Joseph’s Mission site unveiled 93 possible unmarked graves.
