Legislation is being introduced by the BC government in an attempt to collaborate with Indigenous people to manage BC’s wildlife and strengthen reconciliation.
While wildlife management laws have existed in BC for nearly 200 years, this will be the first time the legislation is amended to incorporate the perspective of Indigenous peoples.
The Wildlife Amendment Act, also know as Bill 14, will now be required to consider Indigenous knowledge and create a process where provincial laws can be aligned with Indigenous hunting agreements and traditions to ensure that the act doesn’t negatively impact any Aboriginal constitutional and treaty rights.
The province stated that these changes will key to addressing First Nations concerns and they will work with Indigenous peoples to further review the act.
