Today is World Water Day, and the District of Kitimat is taking that to heart.
Upgrades are on the way to the District’s water system, thanks to a newly announced two year project.
The focus of that project will be on improving the system’s water conditioning, direct sand filtration, and UV disinfection capabilities.
Through the upgrades, the District hopes to bring the system in line with modern regulations, while also preventing future water quality advisories.
A pilot plant, delivered this month, will be run over the next 5 months to test a variety of products to confirm the plant’s design.
Total estimate project costs currently sit at $8.25 million, with $2.2 million already set aside for the project by the District.
In January, they applied for a grant from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s Environmental Quality stream.
If approved, that grant would cover up to 73.3 percent of the project’s total cost.
You can watch the District’s video explaining the upgrades at this link.
