England’s highest ranking Christian official has joined the Pope in apologizing for his church’s role in the Residential School tragedy.
Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, made the apology during a visit to the James Smith Cree Nation in Saskatchewan this weekend.
As head of the Church of England, Welby also serves as the spiritual leader of the Anglican Church, who operated dozens of residential schools in Canada.
In his apology, Welby said he was horrified and ashamed by the evil committed at the schools, and at his church for permitting, allowing, and turning a blind eye to it.
In addition, Welby promised to use his influence to push for the release of records held by the New England Company, which operated the Mohawk Institute Residential School in Ontario.
He also promised to work with other Archbishops to decide how to support survivors.
