Five northerners are among 10 recipients of the YVR Art Foundation’s art scholarship awards for 2022.
Each year, the awards are handed out to Indigenous artists in the Yukon and BC, split in to two categories: emerging and mid-career.
In the emerging category, scholarships go to those aged 17 to 29, looking to work with an artist mentor, or attend a one year art program.
Some of the winners include: Haida artist Derek White from Masset, Danika Saunders of the Nuxalk (New-hawk) and Gwa’sala-Nakwaxda’xw (Gwa-Sala Nag-wak-tao) Nations from Bella Coola, and Tlingit (K-ling-it) artist Violet Gatensby from the Yukon.
Awardees in the mid-career category are aged 30 or older, looking to study with a master artist, pursue a community project, or attend an art school for more than one year.
Two Masset-area artists nabbed scholarships in that category: Danielle Louise Allard of the Haida Nation, and Haida and Kootenay artist Jay Bellis.
Each scholarship is worth $5,000, and you can find a complete list below:
