Earlier today, the Federal Government promised that they will build a national monument that will honor both the survivors and victims of the residential school system.
The monument itself is going to be built in a very recognizable place in Ottawa and its design will be determined by what the government called a survivor-led steering committee, comprised of residential school survivors.
This monument also comes as a result of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission calling for the construction of one in their 2015 landmark report.
$20 million is what the government pledged they would spend on this project in August of last year when hundreds of unmarked graves were found at former residential school sites in BC and Saskatchewan.
The first discussion on this project is expected to take place sometime this month where the committee will look for a site to build it and then start the design process.
No completion date for the monument has been set yet.
