It’s been estimated that over a million BC residents do not have a family doctor.
Try as they may, the provincial government has been trying to recruit MD’s and other medical professionals, but the shortage still continues.
BC isn’t alone in their quest for doctors, but BC seems to be at a disadvantage compared to other provinces.
Northern Health has had its troubles in recruiting for smaller, more remote communities because a bigger population base offer better opportunities and in the north, that gives Prince George a step up.
Retention bonuses are also offered to candidates in the northeast part of BC, but not to those in the northwest.
Until new medical grads are offered a better deal to settle in BC, the shortage will continue to the detriment of the million or so residents who don’t have access to a family doctor.
