Estimated repair costs for the Johnston Bridge have doubled since December, according to a recent update.
During last night’s regular meeting, Quesnel City Council received an update on the project, which will now cost an estimated $11.4 million total.
Last year, council approved a comprehensive repair of the bridge, which would restore capacity back to legal loading requirements, and provide a 15 to 20 year service life.
In December, projections pegged the project at $5.8 million, but unprecedented recent inflation has boosted that to $8.8 million.
On top of that, it has also since been identified that a water main crossing the bridge will also need to be replaced, to the tune of $1.7 million.
Other sewer repair, trail work, and allowances put the total price tag at just over $11.4 million.
In light of this, Council also approved a grant application to the federal Strategic Priorities Fund for $6 million, and allocated $400,000 for a detailed design plan.
