Six individuals and organizations from across BC, including one from the North, are being honoured for their roles in advancing reconciliation.
Each are recipients of the second annual Reconciliation Award, handed out by the BC Achievement Foundation to those who demonstrate leadership, integrity, respect, and commitment to furthering reconciliation.
Among the individual recipients is Brendan Eshom, a member of the Gitga’at First Nation living in Prince Rupert.
Eshom is a long-time advocate of Ts’msyen culture and heritage, as well as a champion of the Sm’algyax language.
Despite only leaving high school in 2020, Eshom has spent years working with speakers and educators of the Sm’algyax language to learn and advance it.
He played a key role in launching the Sm’algyax word website, which is dedicated to sharing the language one word at a time.
He has also helped to launch a complementary ap, and has become a mainstay at speaking events, dedicating himself to the preservation os Ts’msyen heritage.
