BC is making changes to the Province’s Wildlife Act in order to control the feral rabbit population better.
Both Wild European and eastern cottontail rabbits are not native to BC while being known to destroy property such as agricultural crops and are considered a detriment to BC’s native wildlife.
One of the major changes in the wildlife act is that European and eastern cottontail rabbits will no longer be allowed to be relocated to BC or released into the Wild in BC.
Permits will also no longer be required to posses, traffic or export European rabbits and as a result, people will not need permits to trap the rabbits either.
The changes are expected to help increase the potential for people being able to both transport these rabbits away from the habitats and prevent them from damaging the environment more.
