A new building mural is on the way to Kitimat, with residents getting the final say on how it will look.
Earlier this year, the District of Kitimat granted the Kitimat Public Art Alliance $20,000 to go toward the painting of murals in the community.
After identifying a number of suitable locations, the Alliance settled on the Lower City Centre Mall as the site of what they hope to be the first of many murals.
A community vote was then held over multiple days to select a design which fit with the selected theme of “Our Natural Environment”.
By the end, nearly a thousand votes were cast and Chris Fraser’s design was selected out of the four put forward.
Their design features three orcas swimming together amid a cluster of light bursts, representing the continual life cycle and interconnectedness of the Pacific Coast.
