Long-awaited rehabilitation work on the Old Skeena Bridge in Terrace is finally getting underway today.
Construction on the 97 year-old bridge was initially supposed to begin in April, but had to be delayed due to difficulties in finding a contractor.
Last month, the province announced they had awarded the project to Gitga’at Park Derochie Industrial Services, with a $22.6 million bid.
Work on the bridge is now set to begin today, which will cut off both vehicle and pedestrian traffic over the bridge through October of next year.
But the Ministry of Transportation says that, despite traffic being routed over one bridge in the meantime, additional traffic measures will not be needed.
In an update to City Council this month, the Ministry says they have adjusted the timing of some street lights and eliminated a left turn signal at Kalum and Keith to compensate.
They say they are confident these changes will be enough to make up the traffic difference, but also that they will adjust their plans if bakclogs emerge.
