Fourteen new British Columbians will receive the province’s highest honour when they are appointed to the Order of British Columbia this Fall.
Among them is decorated Prince George-based surgeon, Dr Nadine Rena Caron, the first Indigenous woman to become a general surgeon in BC.
She is also the first Indigenous woman to graduate from UBC’s medical school, and has devoted her career to the health needs of Indigenous and northern communities.
Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc Chief Rosanne Casimir will also be honoured for her leadership following the uncovering of 215 unmarked graves at the former Kamloops Residential School.
Former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould will join them in honour of her years of accomplishments and dedication to advancing the rights of Indigenous peoples.
Wilson-Raybould was the first woman to serve as an independent MP in Canada, and the country’s first Indigenous Justice Minister.
