Welcome to another episode of Journeys with your host Kelly Kenny. For tonights episode I had the chance to speak with Janet Yoder. Janet Yoder is a Seattle author who is also a violinist, a piano teacher, a muse, a small town photographer among many other occupations she enjoys fulfilling. For this interview we spoke about her book she wrote “Where the Language Lives”. This book is based on the language of Lushootseed; Lushtootseed is also known as Puget Salish, Puget Sound Salish, or Skagit-Nisqually. In this conversation you will hear how Janet came to learn about Lushootseed through a class she took back in 1978. Janet had no idea that this class would turn into a 30 year friendship with Vi Hilbert. Vi Hilbert taught Lushootseed at the University of Washington for 17 years (1971-1988). Janet accompanied Vi on travels to naming ceremonies, memorials and Salish language conferences; it was Vi lives work to make sure Lushootseed was documented and taught to others. Janet volunteered on Vi’s various projects and interviewed her extensively; this is where the books content is derived from.
