Canada’s top court will finally have Indigenous representation for the first time, with Michelle O’Bonsawin becoming its most recent nominee.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced O’Bonsawin’s nomination to the Supreme Court of Canada this morning, marking a historic moment in Canadian law.
O’Bonsawin, who is an Abenaki member of the Odanak First Nation, also became the first Indigenous woman to serve as a judge in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in 2017.
She has also been a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 2000, and has filled a number of roles in the field of law since.
