With the recent completion of a major project, the Ahousaht First Nation has marked today as a day for celebration.
The major project completion that has the nation ecstatic is their new wastewater treatment plant, located at the nation’s Maaqtusiis Reserve No. 15, finally being done and operational.
The previous plant as well as the old outfall pipe were located in a shellfish habitat susceptible to sewage contamination and they weren’t able to properly protect seafood in addition to not being up to regulatory standards.
This new plant was able to be created thanks to $25 million in funding provided to the nation by the federal government.
In terms of how it will operate, this new plant will adequately collect wastewater, provide secondary biological treatment with disinfection and will be more capable of protecting local marine ecosystems.
