In an announcement that was made back on Sunday, Old Massett Village Chief Councillor Donald Edgars spoke on the launch of a brand new village project.
The project is known as the We Remember Haida Heritage Plaza project and it will see $500,000 be provided by the Federal Government via the Cultural Spaces in Indigenous Communities Program so that the memorial can be constructed.
The Plaza is being created in order to commemorate the Haida people and their history, celebrate their art and language and serve as a gathering place for current and future generations.
Other major reasons for the creation of the Plaza include addressing root causes of violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals as well as to respond to Call for Justice 2.3 since this project is part of the Federal Government’s pathway to address missing and murdered Indigenous, women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.
