Some communities in the northwest already know who their next mayor will be, while others will see it come down to a race.
With the nomination period for this year’s municipal elections closing last week, the candidates who will make up those races are now set.
In Terrace, current Councillor Sean Bujtas will become the next mayor, with no names coming forward to challenge him.
Mayor Phil Germuth will remain at the head of Kitimat’s council table, as he too sees no challengers.
Masset will see Sheri Disney put on the mayor’s hat for the first time, alongside Scott Cabianca across the island in Port Clements.
Prince Rupert will see a new mayor as well, but it will come down to a four candidate race between Stephen Fitzpatrick, Jason Hoang, Chrystopher Thompson, and past mayor Herb Pond.
Port Edward follows suit, with Shawn Pettitt and Carl Schmidt vying against incumbent Knut Bjorndal.
Smithers sees Murray Hawse step forward to challenge incumbent Gladys Atrill, and Daajing Giids’ Mayor Kris Olsen will be challenged by Leslie Johnson and Lisa Pineault.
