With school board trustee elections also being held next month, candidates are being urged to commit to funding healthy universal food programs.
Last week, the province announced a $60 million investment in expanding and improving school food programs.
Now, the Coalition for Healthy School Food is calling on the Districts to use that funding to develop universal programs which meet their guiding principles.
Some of those principles include: ensuring all students have access to the program, and ensuring it is built with Indigenous food sovereignty in mind.
According to the Coalition, Districts can develop policies and frameworks which support healthy, universal programs, and food literacy learning activities.
11 candidates are vying for the Coast Mountains School District’s 7 trustee positions, with Terraces’ Ed Harrison and Margaret Warcup, and Thornhill’s Mike Maxim already securing spots.
