A 40-foot sport fishing vessel caught fire dockside in Prince Rupert, but thankfully, a catastrophe was avoided.
The vessel was tied up at the Rowing and Yacht Club last Friday when a witness saw smoke coming from the boat early in the afternoon.
The Fire Rescue Department, along with the Harbour Authority and Hydro, found the cabin filed with smoke, but before the fire department arrived, a bystander cut the tie lines and towed the boat away from the dock and anchored it just outside the breakwater.
Using the harbour authority’s fire boat and the hydro work boat, first responders were able to put the fire out.
The vessel’s owner wasn’t on board at the time and no one was injured.
The fire is being ruled as accidental.
